CHAPTER ELEVEN

ALL THE WAY up to his apartment and during his shower, Sam questioned what he was doing.

He’d never slept with—never even kissed—a guest before. He didn’t count the time Allie had kissed him, since she also had an ulterior motive, wasn’t a resort guest and he hadn’t been interested in what she was offering.

So what was it about Charlotte that made him forget his ethics? She was the exact physical duplicate of Allie. For all he knew, beneath that killer body could also be the identical duplicitous personality.

He turned off the water in the shower and dried himself. He could call Charlotte and say he’d changed his mind. Tell her this was a bad idea. Or make something up, instead of being so blunt. A resort emergency wouldn’t sound unbelievable after the past few days of mayhem.

Then he remembered how utterly sexy Charlotte looked in her bathing suit. How she felt in his arms, the smoothness of her skin, the subtle curves that made her all woman. The way she kissed him with complete abandon.

Damn. He was in big trouble. This was a situation he didn’t know how to deal with, and there was no one he could confide in.

Even as he reviewed the pros and cons, he was continuing to get ready to go to her room. He dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, collected his cell phone, his radio...and condoms.

No denying he was about to listen to his body and ignore the warnings in his head.

His kids were both still sound asleep when he left his apartment. He stood in front of Charlotte’s door for several minutes before knocking. He knew he’d be on the video footage, but as long as nothing untoward happened on this level to make someone view it, his rendezvous would remain his own secret.

Both he and Charlotte were free to pursue a physical relationship, he reasoned. His former father-in-law had not so subtly hinted several times that Sam should move on, find someone who made him and his kids happy. Not an easy feat when he rarely made it off the island.

As long as it didn’t interfere with Sam’s position at the resort, then what difference should it make if he slept with Charlotte? There was no hard-and-fast rule about it, even if he considered it one to live by.

Although, if he happened to catch one of his employees trying to pick up a guest, he’d be certain to have a talk with him or her.

But this was different. He’d never pursued Charlotte and as far as he could tell, she hadn’t done anything overt to get his attention, either.

They’d merely been drawn to each other by fate.

What harm could befall them by simply acting on their desire?

* * *

CHARLOTTE HAD HURRIED to her room, her mind spinning, refusing to consider whether sleeping with Sam was a good idea or not. She altered the familiar advertising slogan that kept running through her head. “What happens on Sapodilla Cay stays on Sapodilla Cay.
